Leading seaman is in Germany a soldier in the lowest NCO rank with the German Federal Armed Forces within the German navy. In the other armed services (TSKs; Army, Air Force) is called this rank NCO.

Belonging one of the group of careers of the officers go through this rank as a sea-cadet. Soldiers in this rank can give crews of instructions within the borders set by the superior regulation (VorgV).

In the civilian German navigation this designation is unknown. In former times the term (of down-German Mat) designated an assistant, e.g. with an attendant.
