When one designates last mile (read mile) with current and gas supply as well as with telecommunications nets (e.g. telephone network, cable television, Internet) the last section of the line, which leads to the annexe and/or to the participant household.

The last mile was and is in most countries usually in the possession of regional, national or international monopoly enterprises. Since the whole of the annexes cannot at short notice again be provided, the ownership structures change despite opening of the markets (liberalisation) only slowly. Supply enterprises without last mile must usually pay therefore a payment to the owners of the nets. These fees are a continuing point at issue at the adjustment authorities.
