The larger Yellowstone ecological system (English Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem) is the last large, almost intact ecological system in the northern moderate zone of the earth and the prominent natural laboratory of the landscape ecology and geology. World-wide it is well-known as recreation area. Together with the Yellowstone national park further nationally led areas belong to the larger Yellowstone ecological system: The Gallatin, Custer, Caribou Targhee, Bridger Teton and Shoshone national Forests, national the Elk Refuge and the Grand Teton national park. Additionally it covers some plots in private possession. In the national forests outside of the Yellowstone national park since 1996 ten different Wildnis areas were specified, in order to be able to ensure a better protection of the life area. The administration of the ecological system is controversially discussed.

History

The borders of the Yellowstone national park were arbitrarily specified 1872 to cover in hope, all geothermalen basins of the region. The borders did not cover themselves however with the life area of the game animals and the plants. Into the 1970er years the habitat of the in the park was consulted and in its proximity as minimum border of a theoretical Yellowstone ecological system. The area covered 16,000 km Since that time the defined area was ever continued to seize. A study from the year 1994 called a surface of 76.890 km

1985 worried different subs-committee of the US house of representatives about the larger Yellowstone ecological system, that one for public country, national park and recovery. It resulted a report of the research service of the congress (Congressional Research service), which lack in the co-ordination between the authorities it outlined and stressed that the fundamental values of the area were threatened.

Criticism

Critics of the concept of the larger ecological system make valid that it would have to be co-ordinated better with individual animal and plant types. A half century rich not, in order to really know, how a game population in an ecological system changes itself. For example ecologists know that the before the arrival of the Europeans was domestic in the larger ecological system. Contrary to today their population was not at that time isolated. Researchers do not know however whether population at that time or the today's was larger. Even if the population is stably or easily increasing today, it cannot be said with security that this is even in longer period the case.
