Large admiral was the highest rank in imperial navy, realm navy and war navy.

As exterior indications carry these a large admiral staff.

Emergence

Rank developed on requests of the imperial navy, which wanted to have the general field marshal similar a rank. At the 3. May 1900 accepted William II. rank and introduced it thus.

The first admiral, who was appointed in the German fleet the large admiral, was Hans's von Koester. The appointment took place on 28 June 1905.

Rank was assigned up to the end of the empire four times to admirals and twice honour for the sake of.

In the realm resistance rank was not assigned.

War navy

To the Second World War rank was again introduced on 1 April 1939 for Erich wheels. After its dismissal Karl under ommission general admiral Ranges on 31 January 1943 to large admiral was promoted.

Post-war period

The German navy of the German Federal Armed Forces does not know this rank, the People's Navy of the NVA of the GDR knew however the Soviet counterpart fleet admiral.
