By a landowner one understands today the owner of a large agriculture, which can be connected also with other branches of trade such as cheese factory or mill. The difference to a farmer (farmer) exists on the one hand in the size of company (off cca. 100 hectars), on the other hand in the social status.

The latter is due also from the historical development. The former operators of the large goods were partly the actual property rule, partial held them management functions and usually the line of the neighbouring village.

Only around the turn of the century this function mode expired gradually and in Germany and Austria into the 1920er years was legally abolished. The German property goods were dissolved 1927 finally. In Hessen exist modern property goods municipality-free into the present away.
