The Lancia delta was a compact class passenger car von Lancia. He was built from 1979 to 1993 in first generation. A second, as delta Nuova was built from 1993 to 1997 designated generation.

The Lancia delta is internationally by its unparalleled successes in the Rallyesport into the late 80ern and early 90's admits become, into which it dominated the Rallye world championship.

The first generation

The Lancia delta was developed 1979 in relatively short time with Lancia as a successor of the Lancia Fulvia. The basis of the car formed Ritmo for the Fiat. For the outside Design Giorgetto Giugiaro was responsible. The rear axle was designed in typical Lancia manners (this Camuffo rear axle in gamma, beta, topic and many company models blocked). The front axle and the structure of the DELTA were not completely independent and had similarity with a FIAT construction. The wheel base of the DELTA was selected likewise more largely than that of the RITMO. The DELTA had still LANCIA of "genes". The structure of the body, which fits of the body and many details showed substantially design which for LANCIA were typical. The DELTA and its notchback brother prism were produced in Chivasso (Lancia work). At that time one of the most modern works of the world.

First its motorizing was rather weak. Two motorizing were available: 1.301 ccm/75 HP and 1,498 ccm/89 HP. Of a Rallyeinsatz yet one did not think. The first delta was quite successful nevertheless and from the international press to the car of the yearly 1980 was selected. This was the only mark, which received Lancia this honor.

The delta S4

In the Rallyesport Lancia was since successes of the Fulvia end of the 1960er a firm size. The Rallyewagen of the 1970er, the Lancia Stratos and the Lancia beta, was still more dominanter. Therefore the remaining Rallyehersteller took up the development begun by the Stratos and presented models with similar conception, which existed in the combination of a torque-strong engine and rear propulsion. When starting from 1981 the AUDI quattro with all-wheel drive the Rallyesport revolutionized and the FIA with the opening of the group of B a podium for such "HP monsters" created, Lancia reacted with the construction of the Lancia 037 rally. With that Lancia 1983 the Rallye Monte Carlo and the mark WM title could win 037. But Lancia could only rarely bring construction developed on components of the beta and the Stratos the', which set also further on rear propulsion, in the following two years to the point. The all wheel competition had become too strong, particularly on loose underground. The Lancia rally 037 is the last tail-driven vehicle, which could win the Rallye WM.

The solution existed in the development of the delta S4. This had developed in co-operation with Abarth and had now also one all-wheel drive and nevertheless approx. 480 HP (opposite 320 with 037 rally). In its last evolution stage the delta S4 had 650 HP. The Italian automagazine "Quattroruote" determined at that time with a TRACK test an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h on Formel-1-Niveau: 2.4 seconds for a 600-PS-Version. A new fact was that the S4-Motor became "blown" both of a compressor and from a supercharger to maximum output, which help the Rallye-S4 to an extremely salient, kreischenden sound. Apart from the fact also the chassis had been designed completely again and rallyetauglich, so that the delta S4 had to do nothing more in the long run except body and name with the series delta. The delta S4 was inserted starting from 1985 in the Rallyesport, had however only a short Karierre before itself. After it had already before given already heavy accidents with the group B cars, the deadly accident of Lancia Werksfahrer Henri Toivonen and copilot Sergio Cresto was in a delta S4 with the Korsika Rallye 1986 the presumed final trip for banishing the group of B from the Rallye WM at the end of of 1986.

With the 1986er Motorshow in Bologna Lancia had already presented, under the designation experimental Composite Vehicle (ECV), a successor of the delta S4, which had been developed for the planned group of S. But in the suction of the tragic group B developments also this Rallye evolution category had been already rejected of the FIA in the apron again.

The development of the delta HF of integrals and its Rallye Karierre

As soon as the adjustment has been completed the group of B Lancia had to develop a new car for the work employments at the seriesnear group of A, which happened on basis of the series delta. Also the new competition version of the Lancia delta was developed in Turin with Abarth and built, like already many successful Rallye vehicles before (e.g. Fiat 131 Abarth, Lancia 037, Lancia delta S4). The delta HF 4WD had been equipped with the two-litre turbo engine and provided with a permanent all-wheel drive. Already with the premiere 1987 the Lancia Werksteam with Juha Kankkunen at the point drove to a double victory. The road version necessary for the Homologation of the car 165 HP carried out and were equipped like the work cars at that time (approx. 270 HP) still with a narrower body.

But the competition did not sleep also. Therefore 1988 further modifications had to follow, in order issued fenders, the this have the distance to true, the delta HF of integrals to accommodate and new turbocharger, that the achievement of the road version on 185 HP eight centimeters broader axles and, which the work racing car on scarce increased over 300 HP. The only further important change did not concern the brake assembly, which became rear disc brakes increased, the disc brakes in the back had the delta already starting from the 1600GT (108PS) in series, in this class matter of course at that time.

1989 were again improved the still superior delta HF of integrals: A new transmission, a changed, hecklastigere torque distribution, hydraulically operated clutch (before push pull cable) and finally the name-giving 16-Ventilzylinderkopf let almost unattainablly away-drive it the competition. The vehicles of the Rallye Werksteams had now clearly over 300 HP, the road version accurately 200 HP, by a smaller, faster responding loader stand with each number of revolutions more achievement and/or torque for order than with the predecessor. In the best way worked wheel suspensions were maintained. Since the new cylinder head was higher, the hood had to bend itself or curve rather, in addition, later catalyst Achtventiler has the new curved hood.

The delta Evoluzione

1991 came the last stage of the evolution on the market and the stony racing courses, the EVO. Again around seven centimeters broader cars carries out in the group of A-WM about 340 HP, the catalyst-free 16-Ventilstrassenversion puts those to 205 HP at the disposal. Officially to Germany however only Achtventiler with catalyst and 177 HP were imported. The last mark WM title (1992) does not go however to a work team, but to the private Martini team, before Martini was main sponsor of the work team. With 6 mark WM titles in consequence the Lancia delta is the most successful Rallye vehicle of engine haven history.

1993 was brought the last Evos again with improved Serienaustattung like high Recaro Halbschalensitzen, air conditioning system and 16 " - rims on the market. These vehicles had a regulated catalyst and officially as 211 HP were indicated.

The second generation

1993 were presented the successor of the most successful Rallyewagens of all times. The delta Nuova was based on the Fiat Tipo and offered motorizing up to 189 HP, however not to Rallyes was used and had again a front wheel drive. The last Deltas was built 2000.
