The Kufiya belonged to the Arab to the traditional Tracht in Kufa and was later in the whole region under the male both and the beduinischen, far common. As far as the end of the Osmani realm the male urban population in the Arab area carried usually for the Turkish Tarbusch (the Fez in such a way specified). During the Arab rebellion at the beginning of the 1930er years tried the Palestinian-Arab national movement under guidance of the Muftis amine aluminium-Husseinis to intersperse the Kufiya also under the - on the one hand as symbol for self-determination and against the colonialism as well as the Jewish settlement, on the other hand, so that the militant ones of the movement in the cities, coming usually from the country, were noticeable less. The Kufiya was besides a symbol of class consciousness, there it by that economically increasingly Fellachen coming into distress, not however from the large basic owners was carried.

Criticism to the Kufiya

Off its actual political meaning the Palestinian cloth is used in Germany in the youth culture also gladly as Modeaccessoire without directly political symbol content - which has Kufiya thus introduction into the left or allegedly left Popkultur receives. Most carriers express a rather vague with the scarf.

Carrying the Kufiya became generally accepted in the left scene in and the 80's 70's, in times as far as possible unbroken solidarity with the Palestinian independence fight. With the time this symbol strength decoupled itself of the expression of the concrete PLO solidarity to an expression rather general anti-imperialistic consciousness, until the cloth finally became the accessory for people, which felt somehow "left". At the beginning 21. Century carrying the Palestinian cloth of parts of the left scene and from the spectrum of the anti-Germans criticized, there it as document of identification of an anti-Semitic basic attitude, at least however a statement against the State of Israel applies. Because like other symbols from the political culture that linking is taken up also the Kufiya since end of the 1990er years by neo-Nazis (e.g. see the comrade shank cadres Norman boron DIN, Alexander high lake and Hayo Klettenhofer) as subcultureal indication, which is coded as and is understood as symbol of an anti-Israeli attitude.
