The Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft was one of the largest manufacturers of military ships and submarines for the German war navy. Submarines were manufactured also for the Austrian-Hungarian war navy, which in divided form by course to the war harbor Pula was supplied and assembled there.

1867 were created the enterprise in Gaarden with Kiel as a north German shipbuilding company, with also the S.M.Y. Hohenzollern was built. After their bankruptcy it was sold 1879 and resumed as Germaniawerft, until it was taken over 1896 by Krupp.

With the 1908 Schoneryacht finished placed Germania, after draft of max of Oertz for Gustav Krupp of planks and halfoh, a running yacht of this size in Germany one built for the first time.

During the GermanBritish arms race before the First World War built this threw for the imperial navy the large liners floats, prince regent Luitpold, Crown Prince and Saxonia.

Already in the First World War the Germaniawerft built submarines.

In the Second World War the Germaniawerft was an important supplier of the war navy, whereby Kiel became the naval base. Built in the war process altogether 131 submarines (types II, VII, XB, XIV, XVII, XXIII), further 240 were ordered.

1944 had threw over 10.000 employees, 11% of it were forced laborers.

To the Germaniawerft also the order for the building aircraft carriers of the B. went.

After end of the Second World War the already partly destroyed Germaniawerft was one of the first shipyards, which was dismantled. This entailed furious protests of the population of the zerbombten city. The Germaniawerft was thus dissolved and never revived.

End of the sixties-years acquired HDW the area of the former Germaniawerft and manufactures there to today submarines.
