For the Jollenklasse of the same name see Korsar (Bootsklasse).

The expression Korsaren designates Piraten and Freibeuter at the coast of North Africa of 16. Century to beginning 19. Century.

With the fall of the economy in the and the supremacy of the Christian states in the Mediterranean since that 15. Century developed the Korsarentum in the coastal towns of the Maghreb. Centers were thereby Algiers, Tripoli and Tunis. As Korsaren fought many Muslims and Morisken, who had fled since 1492 from Granada and Spain after the conclusion of the Reconquista in the Maghreb. The raids were limited not alone to the Mediterranean, but led also into the Atlantic and even until Iceland.

Particularly in the Mediterranean the maritime trade was substantially impaired, when the Korsaren 1529 got the Turkish Sultan as upper gentlemen recognized and but military support. The most important Korsaren was Arudj, Turgut rice and Cheir OD DIN Barbarossa. With their assistance the Spanish attempts could be defeated for conquering the coastal towns of North Africa. With these fights formed the centers of power Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, which partly already possessed the borders of the today's States of Algeria, Tunesien and Libya, without controlling however the hinterland to the today's extent.

In 17. Century began the fall of the Korsarenflotten, as the European sea powers like e.g. England, which bombarded the Netherlands and France with their fleets several times Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. The USA built the first warships of US Navy, in order to refer the North African Korsaren into their barriers, and acquired in the fight against these (in the so-called first Barbareskenkrieg) their first naval warfare experiences. The Piraterie of the Korsaren found however only with the conquest of Algeria by France around 1830 an end.

The word Korsar originates from that 15. Century of old French "corsaire" (= Pirat), which decreases/goes back on Latin "cursarius" and "cursus" (= run, running).
