Kolophon was in the Greek antique one one of the largest cities in Ionien (small Asia). It lay between Smyrna (in the north) and Ephesos (in the south), connected with the port place Notion. As one of the nut/mother cities of the Ionier it was part of the Ioni federation (Dodekapolis). Was appropriate for thirteen kilometers south of Kolophon the famous Orakel of Klaros. The coniferous trees around Kolophon supplied the resin rosin, which is used at that time like today for the strings by caper instruments.

The city was created allegedly by two sons of the Kodros, the king of Athens, (which into the time after 1089 v. Chr. would fall). Their most famous sons are the philosopher Xenophanes, the poet Mimnermos and the painter Apelles. Kolophon was also one of the ionischen cities, which competed place of birth of Homer to have been.

After 479 v. Chr. became the city member in the attischen sea-federation; 430 v. Chr. became it after party fights Persian and stepped 409 the side of Athens (see Perserkriege). In the year 404 Kolophon fell again under Persian sovereignty, around then in 4. Century v. Chr. to divide the general fate Ioniens. Lysimachos, one of the diadochi Alexanders of the large one, forced the population in the year 302 to resettle after Ephesos which was established under its instruction at new place. Thus the city Kolophon lost its meaning. Their name was transferred first to Notion; in the 1. Century v. Chr. however each trace of it lost itself.

The ruins of the city are today in the village Degirmendere in the administrative district Izmir, Turkey.
