The Kimberley process is a complex system, which is to prevent the trade with so-called blood diamonds over national origin certificates. Blood diamonds smuggled diamonds are called, by which different wars in Africa are financed and/or became.

Prehistory

The civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, financed over illegaly dug diamonds, made the problem of the blood diamonds clear in the 90's. 1998 forbade the UN security council for the first time to a rebel movement, the Angolan UNITA, the export of diamonds with the intention of terminating so the civil war in the country. When it had become obvious that the UNITA financed further its war over diamonds, met May 2000 in the South African Kimberley some African diamond promotion states, in order to concern the problem in principle. Since 2003 are the Kimberley process officially into force, i.e. may do it only such diamonds are acted, for which official origin certificates of the respective country of origin are present.

Present conditions and further planning

In the meantime 43 countries, under it all African diamond producers, take part in the Kimberley process. An international committee was furnished, which examines whether the participating states issue the certificates correctly. Beside some reports over corruption within the process and there are falsified certificates some obvious successes of the system. In the meantime beyond that considerations exist to develop the system with positive direction of attack. It is to go not only away of the blood or "war diamond", but also to peace diamonds, thus to a system that brings up for discussion also social or ecological questions ("diamonds for development").
