Kawasaki Heavy Industries (short Kawasaki, abbreviation KHI, on Japanese: Kawasaki Jukogyo Kabushiki gaisha) is a Japanese heavy industry company.

The company is divided into the prime data areas building of ships, air and space technology, high (railways, building vehicles, motorcycles), construction of vehicles and foundation engineering as well as machine and building of energy installations (gas turbines, wind energy plants). In Germany Kawasaki is particularly well-known by the motorcycle production.

History

In the year 1878 Shozo Kawasaki in Tokyo created the dockyard Kawasaki Tsukiji Shipyard and put thereby the foundation-stone for the future Wirtschaftsimperium. In the year 1901 Kawasaki designed the first steam engine of Japan, and before the Second World War the enterprise contributed crucially to the development of the fleet, which caused later large difficulties to the American navy. The most well-known airplane sample, which manufactured Kawasaki in the Second World War, was the Ki-61 Hien.

After the war and the dismantling of the armaments industry Kawasaki was to be changed over forced production. First a cylinder four-stroke engines with 148-150ccm were manufactured. In January 1961 then the first motorcycle left the work, it was the 125 B7.

Later Kawasaki worked also again in the aircraft construction and produced the transport aircraft c1 and the jet-powered trainer aircraft T-4 for the Japanese self-defense forces.

Milestones in motorcycle production

1966 began the ascent of Kawasaki. When still English marks controlled the market, the Kawasaki W1 with scarcely 50 HP from 650 ccm showed that also Japanese could build high speed motorcycles.

1969 Kawasaki 500 H1 Mach III - the Dreizylinder Zweitakter with 500 ccm and 60 HP was unbeatable in acceleration at this time. The chassis had been up to to this achievement under no circumstances and one gave to the motorcycle the surname Witwenmacher. First model of a three-cylinder row between 250 and 750 ccm, 35 to 75 HP.

1972 the Kawasaki Z1 was the first series motorcycle with two obenliegenden cam shafts (DOHC) and air-cooled row four-cylinder. It was at that time the strongest motorcycle of the world with 900 ccm and 82 HP. First model of a large series of four-cylinders with 900 to 1100 ccm, 82 to 120 HP.

First a cylinder four-cycle brings 1977 Kawasaki the model on the market. The Z200. With 17 HP and 200 ccm it was meant 1981 as favorable a riser motorcycle, from the larger Z250 was however already replaced.

1979 large Tourer Kawasaki Z 1300. First standard water-cooled six cylinder motorcycle of the world with 130 HP. Released together with Honda CBX the discussions over the restriction of achievement on 100 HP in Germany. Only small numbers of items, today a in demand Youngtimer.

1982 the Kawasaki KZ550B come under the trade name GT on the market. The 50 HP-Tourer had Kardan instead of Kettenantrieb (is considered as everlasting) and up to the year 1990 one builds.

1983 the Kawasaki GPZ900R were sold at the American market under the name "Ninja". The motorcycles, which carried this name later world-wide, form also today still the flagships of Kawasaki.

1984 introduction of the KLR 600/650 in Germany, in order to keep up with the competition la Yamaha XT.

1985 Kawasaki GPZ 400 R (in Europe as GPZ 600 R). The original Design of this model led to continuously good sales figures. It differed from other Racing Replicas by an innovative steel framework in the aluminum Design.

1989 Kawasaki Zephyr - Naked Bike. The machine led the change of trend away from full-disguised Rennreplikas to the motorcycle technology-showing. The concept showed effect and fast by other manufacturers was adapted. Likewise the first Kawasaki ZXR750 came on the market.

1990 Kawasaki ZZ-R1100. As technical plaything a RAM air system, with which the stagnation pressure is consulted for the engine loading, was inserted. 147 HP and a Tacho to over 300 km/h let the equipment particularly appear suitable for Geschwindigkeitsfanatiker.

1992 Kawasaki Estrella: Motorcycle in the Design and of the 60's 50's. and small sister of the Kawasaki W650. In Germany despite salient Designs because of its power ratings a flop, in Japan until today a success.

1998 W650 - classic Design. In the Retrodesign the W650 was brought on the market.

1999 introduction of the ZR 7, four-cylinder row air-cooled in the modern vehicle Design. Current chassis technology with mono shock strut. The ideal Allroundmotorrad. Only as Naked Bike, later also with half shell than S-version.

2000 Kawasaki ZX-12R. The new flagship of Kawasaki became the new Ninja with 178 HP.

2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R, ZX-6RR and Z 1000. Complete new development of the ZX 6 R with 636 ccm and the 600 ccm version ZX 6 RR for the supersport. With the polarizing Design of the Z1000 the legend of the Z-models is revived.

2004 ZX-10R, Z750. Kawasaki brings the strongest supersportsman on the market: 175 HP with 170kg dry weight

2005 ZX-6R, Z750S. Kawasaki brings the strongest 600er to supersportsmen on the market: 136 HP with 164kg dry weight (whereby the ZX-6R with 636 ccm is actually no genuine 600er more.)

2006 ZZR1400, Ninja ZX-14. With 192 HP (with RAM air Intake effect 200PS) from one 1400 ccm R4 engine that up-to-date (12/2005) strongest series motorcycle of the world.
