The Karstadt compactly GmbH & CO. Kg resulted to a subsidiary of the KarstadtQuelle AG from separating of 75 department stores from the Karstadt department store AG. Crucial criterion for separating was the branch size: All houses of the group of compact have a sales area under 7,500 square meter.

Separating was justified with the fact that the mark Karstadt can be presented only on a larger surface. For the smaller department stores a new concept should be prepared. In the course of the restructuring and the reduction of debts of the KarstadtQuelle company the Karstadt became compact GmbH & CO. Kg from the nut/mother company to 1 October 2005 to a Investmentgruppe from Great Britain sells. The branch in Wismar was in the original list of sales with contained, however not sold, because it is the principal firm of Karstadt, in the Rudolph Karstadt 1881 the enterprise based.

The Karstadt compactly GmbH & CO. Kg may this names as far as end of the yearly 2006 carry, and must then rename itself. The new enterprise designation is not certain at present.
