Karl was the owner of the of Wella company. End of the 1960er-Jahre he began to collect on a large scale modern art. Originally Darmstadt should the collection receive, if the city would build in response an art museum, what by local Querelen was prevented. Today some of collection forms the establishment stick of the museum for modern trend art in Frankfurt/Main.

The family is also today still active as collecting tanks of contemporary art.
