In Namibia the Karakulzucht is and - attitude an important branch of the agriculture and has its origin in the German colonial age. 1902 undertook a German fur dealer a business journey after Buchera in Usbekistan and brought from there 36 Karakul sheep to Germany also, in order to try a settlement here. For climatic reasons however most animals were received. At the same time the governor von from Lindequist, strove for the stabilization of the agriculture around the settlement of for this arid country suitable animals and plants. Thus 1908 the last 12 Karakuls from Germany was spent to southwest Africa, where they recovered first also good - then however all together at an illness at the basis went. Initial success however had made courage and owing to the good relations of the German emperor with the Russian Zaren gradually 820 Karakuls from Usbekistan to German southwest Africa had been delivered subsequently in such a way. They formed the basic stick of the South West African Karakulzucht, although it should take still 25 years, until the sheep race SWAKARA (= South West African Karakul), bred here, interspersed itself and could - still more importantly - the black, fine-lured SWAKARA Fellchen at the world market in competition to the established Persianer skins from Buchera maintain ground. Many Farmer in southwest Africa arranged the good sales prospects to the conversion to the Karakul Schafhaltung. 1969 achieved namibische production with 3,5 Mill. = 40% of the world production their high point.
The competition other, clearly cheaper breed furs however and a general decrease of the demand for nature furs led 1991 to the collapse of the Karakulzucht in Namibia. It succeeded, not least also with German development assistance to remove beside skin production also the meat and Wollproduktion and to receive thus the master herds for breed purposes; but nevertheless production that could not tie today Nakara Persianerfelle mentioned no more to successes of the 1960-er years.
