A Kapitular is after the right of the Roman-catholic church a priest, who is entrusted alone or in community with other priests (the chapter) the task to hold at a Kathedralkirche solemn services and to fulfill all tasks assigned by the bishop.

Frequently a Kapitular is called also cathedral gentleman and the chapter as cathedral chapter. The cathedral chapter possesses in Germany (except in Bavaria) and Switzerland, as well as further (among other things in the ore diocese Salzburg) unites among other things a right to vote in the case of the new occupation of the bishop chair of the anyhow however a right to vote for the Kapitelvikar (also Kapitelsvikar or Kapitularvikar), which in the case the Vakanz of the bishop chair the provisionally leads, soferne no apostolischer administrator is ordered.

At the point of a cathedral chapter the stands. These are a Dompropst or a Domdechant and in some chapters also both together. The number of Kanoniker of a cathedral chapter is not everywhere alike. Like that there is in Cologne 12 residing and 4 Nichtresidierende cathedral gentlemen, in Fulda against it only 6 residing cathedral gentlemen, in Erfurt 5 residing and 3 Nichtresidierende Kapitulare.Assistenten or representative of the Domkapitulare calls themselves Domvikare.
