The journal for pure and applied mathematics, briefly Crelles journal, is one of the most renowned mathematical technical periodicals. 1826 by August Leopold Crelle in Berlin and is thereby the oldest today still existing Periodikum was created in the field of mathematics.

Crelle had planned the journal as consequence of quarter writings, by which the four should be combined into a volume. The actual frequency of the booklets was appropriate however already starting from 1830 more highly, already for 1887 could the 100. Volume appear, the 200. in the year 1958. "Into the range of their articles are to belong:

1. The abstract mathematics, thus analysis, geometry and the theory of the mechanics in their whole expansion.
2. Applications of mathematics of all kinds, e.g. on the science of the light (optics, Catoptrik, Dioptrik), on the theory of the warmth, on the theory of the sound, on the probabilities etc.; furthermore hydraulics, the machine teachings, mathematical geography, geodesy etc. the astronomy is to be impossible, in addition, not constitute no main object, because this science employs alone a magazine. "

Soon however a focusing took place on mathematical topics. Work from the field of physics had in 19. Century still another firm place, among other things appeared contributions of George Simon ohm, Ludwig Boltzmann and Hermann of Helmholtz, but approximately starting from the turn of the century the journal had become the purely mathematical magazine.

Publisher

After Crelles death 1855 was continued the journal to end of the 1970er-Jahre by outstanding professors of the citizens of Berlin university. Since 1977/79 those is appropriate for publisher shank at an international committee of approximately six to eight renowned mathematicians.
