Sir Josiah Child, (* 1630 in London; "† 22 June 1699), was a British buyer, economist and a mercantilist.

By intelligently computed purchases of common stock of the British east India company it succeeded within a short time at wealth, became member of the committee of the eastIndian company and brought the most important places of the society in London as well as in the Indian enterprises into the possession of its relatives and favourites.

At first belonging to the Whig party, Child stepped later, after he 1678 Baronet become, as a governor of the east India company to the Tories over. Child knew itself to maintain by intelligent Freigiebigkeit in the favour of the English king house and all, which had influence to win for itself. Even Karl II. and Jakob II. accepted gifts from him.

Only after driving out of the Jakobs II. and the accession of William III. had Child, against which now a violent agitation rose, another governor Platz make.
