Sir Joseph Whitworth (* 1803; "† 1887) were a British engineer.

English engineer Joseph Whitworth carried out in 19. Century innovative work for the break with manufacturing methods relating to crafts for the exchange change which can be preferred industrially.

In particular Whitworth was concerned with measuring technique and the mounting threads. One of the threads standardized today was designated after it as Whitworth thread.

Its most important contribution however for the history of the technology: Whitworth is considered as an inventor of the standardization, generic term of all description, which makes the exchange's building possible.

With the exchange's building the individual parts no more are individually possibly manufactured one on the other in trying relationship with the neighbouring construction units fit in as in the method relating to crafts, but after design with masses and tolerances without knowledge of the neighbour parts.

Instead of a concrete part also, homogeneous other part manufactured after the same design can be installed. Thus a more rational, industrielle is made possible for manufacturing and assembly, which depends however on a precise description of the partial characteristics in the form of designs and parts lists, of the accuracy and quality of the manufacturing processes and - machines as well as the qualification that at the manufacture process and with the examinations take part persontwice were Whitworth president of the institution OF Mechanical Engineers.
