Josef Erber (to 1944 Josef Houstek) (* 16 October 1897 in Ottendorf Austria Hungary "† 1987) and member of the camp Gestapo were in the concentration camp Auschwitz

Life

Erber became 1897 in Ottendorf (tschech. Otice) born. After the attendance of the elementary school he worked in a spinning mill. 1915 it became k.u.k. Infantry regiment Nr.18 drawn in and was used as soldier in Russia and Italy. After end of war he worked again as a spinning mill worker. Also in the Czech army it carried military service out and worked afterwards until 1940 in the Spinnerei.1936 occurred Erber the Sudeten German a party. 1939 it became member of the NSDAP and the SS. In October 1940 it received its summoning to a SS-Totenkopfeinheit. At the beginning of November 1940 came Erber to Auschwitz and remained there up to evacuation of the camp in January 1945.

Erber belonged first to the security guard of the camp and came then to the Waffenmeisterei. In the middle of 1942 was shifted Erber to the political department of (camp Gestapo) in Auschwitz I. Apart from different tasks in the camp he was director/conductor of the admission in the woman camp.

Erber was frequently divided to the ramp service. It participated also in the segregation of the prisoners not-able to work. After statements Frankfurt courts of assizes was involved Erber in altogether fifty selections.

Erber: "Direct away from the ramp [into the Gaskammern]. There they were however again counted before, because it required Berlin of us that one counts hair-exactly, and also the details, thus specially held whether men or women." (Demant)

Erber (to the crematoria in Auschwitz): "Were four crematoria. Thus in Birkenau, of Birkenau I speak. ["Â…] Those had a capacity of three thousand people." (Demant)

Erber was involved in selections in the woman camp. 1942 female prisoners had to jump over a ditch in September. Who (because of weakening) did not create became guest.

In February 1944 Erber was carried to and distinguished with war Distinguished Service Cross of second class.

After 1945

In May 1945 Erber came into American war shank. Christmas 1947 it became to dismiss. He worked 15 years long in a spinning mill in yard (Bavaria).

On 1 October 1962 he was arrested. In the time of 14 December 1965 by 16 September 1966 at the regional court Frankfurt the process was made for it.

It was guiltily found the joint murder in seventy cases and condemned to lifelong penintentiary.

1986 it became to dismiss and deceased one year later, than pensioners.
