The veterinary surgeon John Boyd Dunlop (* 5 February 1840 in Dreghorn/Scotland, "† 23 November 1921) is considered as an inventor of the air-filled tire.

About the invention of the pneumatic tire the anecdote is generally told that Dunlop was annoyed at the noise of the metal tires of the tricycle of its son. It wound stuck hoses for the vehicle from thin rubber plates around the wheels and inflated the coverings with a football pump. That was in the year 1888. On 7 December 1888 it announces the patent for the first bicycle pneumatic tire and creates one year later the first tire work of the later Dunlop group. The patent sold it some to time later at William Harvey you Cros. It did not become time of its life richly by its invention.

In 19. Century many discoveries were made, which smoothed the way to the pneumatic tire:

  • the discovery of the Vulkanisation, those is generally awarded the American Charles Goodyear (1839)
  • in the year 1867 Robert William Thomson invented the solid tire
  • increased india rubber production, among other things by creation of india rubber plan days in Southeast Asia (1876 by Sir Henry Wickham)
