James Ephraim Lovelock CBE (* 26. July 1919 in Letchworth guard town center, England) be chemist, physician, physicist and inventor and joint founder the Gaia hypothesis and physiology the earth (physiology). At present it is "Honorary Visiting Fellow" at the "Green college" of the University of Oxford. Its autobiography it published 2000.

Main points of work

James Lovelocks interest applies for the science of the life, originally in the medical research of humans, then the earth. Special fields are the geo physiology and the system science of the earth. Its second interest area is that the instrument development. Lovelock developed the electron capture detector (ECD), which is in environmental analytics of great importance. Only with the ECD it became possible, chlorinated environmental poisons such as PCBs and chlorinated Pestizide such as DDT sensitively to prove.

Study

Lovelock made its Bachelor in chemistry at the University of Manchester (1941). it attained a doctorate to 1948 to London School OF hygiene and Tropical Medicine in medicine "Ph.D." and 1959 at the University of London in biophysics.

  • 1954-55 Rockefeller Travelling Fellowship in Medicine RK Harvard University
  • 1958 Visiting Scientist, Yale University Medical School, the USA
  • 1961 to 1964 professor for chemistry at the "Baylor University college OF Medicine" in Houston, Texas
  • 1964 it led an independent scientific laboratory, its honorary academic activities as a guest professor maintained it however, first at the University of Houston, then at the University of Reading in U.K.
  • 1982 member of the board of the "navy Biological Association RK Plymouth"
  • 1986 to 1990 president of the "navy Biological Association RK Plymouth"

Publications

James Lovelock wrote over 200 scientific publications in medicine, biology, instrument research and geo physiology and over 50 patents announced, mostly for detectors in the chemical analysis their to apply.

  • The Gaia principle. The biography of our planet. 1981
  • The Ages OF Gaia, (W.W. Norton, 1988)
  • Gaia: the practical science OF planetary medicine, (Gaia Books, 1991), German Gaia: The earth is an organism. Anatomy and physiology of the organism earth 1991

Opinion

Environmental protection with nuclear energy

Nuclear power, radioactivity for humans is so harmful, so little dares humans into radioactively contaminated areas. The winners are Flora and fauna, which habitat back-gotten, about which they were in former times driven out, as e.g. into the urbanized area with Tschernobyl. Where everything is deserted now, the trees and bushes grow over the abandoned area and animals, which are more immune usually all eh opposite than humans, get a habitat completely unimpaired from destructive human hand.
