Amann, also Ammann or Aman (* around 1450; "† after 1521) city physician in Ravensburg and Esslingen at the Neckar as well as author of a plague booklet were.

Life

Over Amanns life is only few well-known. Unknown is about, where he received his medical doctor title. From 1479 to 1490 it was active as a physician in Ravensburg. Amann in Ravensburg experienced about 150 years after the outbreak of the European Pestpandemie at least around 1484 one plague epidemic disease. At that time the abbott and many choir gentlemen of the close Weissenau died.

Starting from 1493 the Esslinger town councillor strove to appoint Amann as a city physician particularly since the city did not have an own city physician for many years more. Exchanges of letters between Esslinger and Ravensburger places show that Amann must have been active at this time still as a physician in Ravensburg and environment. The Weissenauer abbott, the Truchsess of forest castle and the count von Montfort used in letters for remaining Amanns in Ravensburg. Esslingen insisted however on the order already negotiated in the meantime with Amann (probably on lifetime), and so began Amann there finally 1496 its place as a city physician.

In Ravensburg Dr. Aman is mentioned 1497, 1503, 1506 and 1512 in tax books. From an entry 1521 over Amanns woman follows that he still alive was, however in another city lived. In a further received tax book of 1545 also Amanns woman is no longer specified.

The plague booklet of 1494

1494 wrote a plague booklet in German language to Amann. The choice of the language puts near the fact that the handwriting does not intend for physicians was written but for the town councillor or a rich citizen. The complete title reads: Regimendt in dying anno 1494, Ammann of the medicine Doctor to Rauenspurg Besteltt. 16 x 21.2 cm the large manuscript is in city archives Ravensburg (signature 36 D).

Amann describes the symptoms of the plague, preventive measures and therapy possibilities in the booklet. For Vorbeugung Amann recommends to drink garnet apple juice and wine badly, to avoid poisoned air herbs in the house to scatter and smoke, to the shaving lotion disinfecting means to add as well as regularly bathe and the vein leave. For stronger patients for example it guesses/advises to use at that time according to standard used the bleeding almost rabiat:

And if the veins are large and foll and humans rout and is beautiful more under angesichtt and hatt sin volume-broken memos live eat and trincken and too with fil gearbaitt and nit he is fil bluotzss by in over 60 iar, then in such a way hatt, which leave sol man in such a way in to becomes in still onmechtig.

The booklet contains in addition an evaluation of the compatibility of numerous food. It arranges the preventing means according to such for rich patients (for instance the cosmic forces of beads, Korallen, jewels and gold panels, which the rich Patriziergeschlechter for instance the Ravensburger commercial company possessed reliably in sufficient measure) and poorer patients (Borretsch and carnation blooms, Salbei, Minze, awake getting the berries among other things).

As therapy Amann calls the burning out out or ointments of the plague dents as well as giving pills from aloe, Safran and Myrrhe. It ignores also psychological aspects not and recommends a always cheerful mind, which the patient or the female patient is to reach by music, vintages, decoration and beautiful clothes.
