Internationally fair the trade Association, shortened IFAT, is a global network of organizations of the fair trade.

IFAT constantly grows since its establishment 1989 and has in the year 2004 more than 200 members, that come from 55 different countries in the world. The composition of the IFAT members is to be called globally, because they represent organizations from countries of Asia, Africa, latin and North America, Europe, from Australia and the Pacific area.

The IFAT members are producer-cooperative and - combinations, export marketing companies, importers, retailer, national regional of fair trade networks and financial establishment ions, which belong to the fair trade movement. The network IFAT therefore represents the entire fair chain, from the product up to the sales.

Task

Their task of IFATs sees in improving the social situations of disadvantaged producers to promote the co-operation from fair trading organisations to and use themselves for a larger justice in the world trade.

The history of IFAT

IFAT was created in the year 1989 in the Netherlands following a conference.

Since center of the 1970er years were there regular meetings of the fair trading organisations. Center of the 1980er years the producers of the goods for the fair trade were strongly met by the international debt crisis and the falling Rohstoffpreisen.

It became clear that one had to strengthen co-operation under all at the fair trade organizations involved on international level, in order to attain larger international influence.

Since 1989 the IFAT constantly grew up to a global network. The producers of fair commercial products belong the IFAT since 1991 and constitute at present two thirds of their members.
