The international commission for large dams, "internationally Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD)" and/or "Commission international one of the Grands of barrages (CIGB)", is an international non-government organization, which makes a forum available for the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the dam nature. ICOLD uses itself for the fact that dams are built surely, efficiently, economically and without harmful influences on the environment.
ICOLD was created 1928 and is represented in 82 countries of the earth by national committees with approximately 7000 personal members. These work as engineers, geologists and scientists at national or private organizations, at engineer's offices, universities, laboratories and Baufirmen.ICOLDs an original goal were, the progress when planning, draft, building, enterprise and maintenance from large dams and assigned buildings to to be fertilized. In addition relevant knowledge and information were collected, prepared and spread, as well as studied special technical questions. For the sixties new emphasis topics, like dam security, resulted monitoring, safety analyses for existing buildings, aging of buildings and environmental compatibility.
Later further technical, economic and social topics were added, like cost use analyses, the use of international rivers, the material information of the public and financing matters. ICOLD pursues its goals through
ICOLD maintains its Generalsekretariat in Paris.
