Institut for world economy (IfW) at the University of Kiel is a center of world-economical research and documentation renowned internationally. It was created 1914 by Bernhard Harms under the name "Institut for maritime traffic and world economy".

The IfW is involved in diagnoses of the overall economic development and in the economic situation prognoses of the six prominent German research institutes for economics. To the IfW the German Zentralbibliothek for economic science (ZBW) belongs. She collects literature to people and world economy from the entire world. The existence amounts to approx. 2.6 million volumes. Institut and Bibliothek belong to the Leibniz community and are at the same time part of the Kieler university. Because of the supraregional meaning becomes Institut of the federation, which finances community of the countries and the country Schleswig-Holstein. It employs approx. 270 persons, of it over 80 scientists. Present president is Dennis Snower.
