Under information management [] different measures for context-fair supply and documentation of information are summarized particularly into and for enterprises. Information management can be understood as a component of the management or as task of its own documentation mechanism.

Information management also the organizational unit is named, which is responsible for the management of the operational function IT (one speaks therefore also of the IT-management). The high-level personnel of the information management on strategic level (Top management) is called Chief information Officer CIO. Systematic proceedings, more exactly: Methods, techniques and tools for the treatment of the tasks information management are summarized under the designation information engineering.

The borders between information management, knowledge management and documentation are not to be drawn always clearly. Contrary to knowledge management information management is not concerned with individual and organisationalem learning. Similarly it behaves with the demarcation between information management and Controlling. The tasks of the ranges mentioned exhibit frequently overlaps.

Models

Information management after Krcmar

Information management contains all "(...) tasks of management, those on the one hand on three levels (according to the treated objects)

  • Information economy (article: Supply and demand of information)
  • Information systems (article: Data, processes, application systems)
  • IuK technology (article: Storage, processing, communication)

on the other hand over the levels away than

  • Executive functions (article: In meaning, in organizational structure, in personnel, Iv-Controlling)

to be realized must. "

This concept is well-known also as outline model of Krcmar.

Information management after Mertens

  • Long-term planning for the advancement of the IT
  • IT as means for the stabilization of the strategic position of the enterprise.
  • Information as business resources
  • Effective and economic supply of the enterprise with the necessary information
  • Mgmt. assigned technical and personnel resources

Information management after Heinrich

Information management is understood" and covered "as "the line acting (the management) in the enterprise regarding information and communication all executive functions, which are concerned with information and communication"Â…". All tasks, which are concerned with information and communication, are summarized under the term information function. The model by Heinrich is to be assigned to the line-centered beginning of the information management.

A goal of the information management is it to develop an information infrastructure and managen in such a way and use that an optimal support is made possible for the information function and an optimal contribution is made to the entrepreneurial success.

For the conversion of the goals tasks of the information management on strategic, administrative and operational level are defined. On strategic level the information infrastructure is planned, supervised and steered; on administrative level take place planning, monitoring and control for the components of the information infrastructure - e.g. for application systems and coworkers. The operational level covers tasks of the use of the information infrastructure (net services, maintenance etc.).

On each task level for the support of the task fulfilment methods, techniques and tools are used. The whole of these methods. Techniques and tools and their application for enterprise-far planning, analysis, draft and conversion of information systems is information engineering.

Beginnings

Information resource management

Information resource management is concerned with the use, planning and control of external and internal information resources within an enterprise or other organization information as factor of production is understood. The management has here the task to place the availability of the factors of production surely and to place suitable operational funds to the covering of the demand for information ready. In addition also the creation and care belong inside and to non-operational mechanisms to the information supply.

Personal information management

The point of view is here on handling information because of (personal) the job (English: Information handling). The management supports the individual data processing by noticing operational and administrative tasks.

Process orientated information management

With this beginning the enterprise organization is aligned strategically at the business processes, therefore also the information infrastructure is put on on the support of the business processes. The management covers the integration of the functional areas into the data processing.

Line-centered information management

The management acts line regarding information and communication in the enterprise. Thereby all executive functions which are concerned with communication in the enterprise and in the direct enterprise surrounding field, are covered.

This beginning represented of Heinrich, Lutz J.: Information management - planning, monitoring and controlling of the information infrastructure. Since 1985 in the Oldenbourg science publishing house, 8. Edition 2005.

Management of information

Task of the management is it to guarantee the information-economical equilibrium in the enterprise or the organization. Information is understood as factor of production, can be manufactured thus. The field covers:

  • Seize the need for information: All information necessary for the optimal task fulfilment must be identified and solidified detailed. Necessarily here specifying the information contents, the representational form, is the time of the need and the context.
  • Tarpaulins of the information offer: All internal information existence and sources of information must be seized. Likewise the external information offer must be analyzed. These steps result into the definition of a Informationsquellenportfolios.
  • Available-make for the necessary information: That access to internal sources of information must be guaranteed in technical and legal regard, this applies also to external sources of information. Information must be prepared suitable (physically and logically).
  • Organization of the information supply: Information must be assigned to the organizational units and be regulated by suitable policies. The responsibility for care of the volume of data must be fixed. The information use must take place with suitable mechanisms and procedures.

The tasks specified above are a rough description of the tasks of analysis, strategic tasks, tasks of realization and operational tasks of the information management.

Management of information systems

The management of information systems is concerned with the employment of information technology and - technology for the fulfilment and support of the operational tasks of information (see section "´Management of Information"´). The definition of the information system is scientifically still disputed, generally summarizes one here however (application system) + (humans) = (information system). As Anwendungsystem (hardware system) + (software system) = (Anwendungsystem) one understands. The field covers

  • Generation of project ideas:
  1. (economically) after attractive ranges of application of the information technology and - technology will become searched and further the divisions critical for the entrepreneurial success identified. As result improvement suggestions and organizational innovations are generated, which are linked with suitable information technology and - technology.
  2. (scientifically) after attractive ranges of application of the information technology and - technology is looked for and new use possibilities of the information technology and - technology are identified. After evaluation of the serviceability of the different techniques and technologies areas of application can be compiled.
  3. (application orientated) after application type of the information technology and - technology, which improvement and/or extension of the existing application systems entail, is looked for. Gaps and weaknesses of existing systems are uncovered and suitable techniques and technologies are identified, which cause an improvement and/or an extension with the respective application system.
  • Compilation of the Projektportfolios: The projects are defined on the basis their goals and contents as well as under determination of the time and resources need. After analysis of project dependence an evaluation and a selection of the projects can take place according to suitable criteria (e.g. economic use).
  • Realization of the Anwendungsysteme: The realization is task of the software technology, and/or the system engineering.
  • Introduction of the application systems: New systems must be introduced both technically (e.g. installation and integration), organizational (introduction of new or changed operational sequences) and personnel (proclamation, training, acceptance).
