The historical magazine (abbreviation "cycles per second") is general an every two months appearing German-language technical periodical for the science of history with special consideration of methodologischer and science-historical aspects.

As forerunners to the historical magazine as general-historical scientific organ the historical-political magazine Leopold of Rankes from 1833 to 1836 as well as in particular the 1844-1848 of William Adolf Schmidt published magazine are considered to science of history.

The historical magazine was justified in the year 1859 by Heinrich of Sybel. In the early phase up to the end of the 1. World war was it an organ with predominantly Protestant konfessioneller adjustment in the Prussian sense, which represented thus the Prussian claim to leadership German Reich. Therefore catholic authors were rarely represented. In the time, which is called culture fight, pretty often attacks on the catholic historical view seemed Luther and the protest anti-mash particularly in connection with Martin. Turned around catholic journalism published magazines of political-historical contents with clearly anti-Prussian tendency like among other things historical-political sheets for catholic Germany and historical yearbook. Today the konfessionelle criterion became insignificant.

Among the authors of the historical magazine ranked a set of famous authors like among other things Heinrich of Treitschke, Heinrich of Sybel themselves, Hermann tree garden, Friedrich my corner, William masonry crusher, George Voigt and Johann Gustav Droysen. Further publishers of the historical magazine were except Heinrich of Sybel among other things Friedrich my corner and Theodor Schieder. Beside essays to modern topics already an extensive review part particularly appeared to new publications of the historicalscientific literature, also the Ur and early history, the antiquity, the Middle Ages since their establishment, which considered early modern times and the newer one/newest history.

The historical magazine still applies in the German science of history as the prominent magazine.
