Health resort a locality is called, to which due to its special suitability for a medical therapy (for example in the context of a cure) an appropriate descriptor was lent. One calls health resorts, in which are practiced to water cures (bath cure or drinking cure), also bathing resorts.

In Germany the acknowledgment takes place as health resort generally via a health resort law or an appropriate regulation of the respective Land of the Federal Republic.

The first bathing or health resorts originated in in 18. Century in England for the upper and central layer. Examples from this time are Bath, Brighton, Buxton and Harrogate. Starting from that 19. Century was passed this development also to the European mainland. The Baltic Sea baths or the health resorts Karl bath and Marienbad developed soon for the meeting place of the elevated society. In Russia the health spas in the 19.Jh developed., famous example are Sotschi. In Japan in earliest time the hot sources (Onsen) were already used for bathing, after the opening of the country in 19. Jh. were furnished in some places with these sources after western model of health resorts, which are today popular tourist goals, about Beppu.

In Germany from different institutions the following descriptors will assign:

• Welfare-climatic health resort
• Kneippkurort
• Seaside resort
• Therapeutic bath (sea-therapeutic bath, mineral therapeutic bath, moorland therapeutic bath, Kneippheilbad)

Air health resorts must be specified separately, since this common descriptor does not require the operational readiness level from medical mechanisms to the stationary execution of a cure.

In Erholungsorten usually no cure enterprise takes place. Besides there are still nationally recognized tourism municipalities.

Health resort medicine

Health resorts are authority centers both in the range of the medical and the therapeutic supply. Thus the cure physicians have additionally to the usual medical training detailed knowledge of the local nature welfare procedures (localtypical cures) and have appropriate experience with these applications. The therapists are usually specialized. Thus can be obtained with the cure stays usually larger sound sequence than at the residence. Besides the cure-local infrastructure is usually so put on that the guest does much for his health.
