A hairdresser (also in German German Coiffeur) is a specialist for the care of the Kopfhaars and the organization of the hair-style. The occupation developed in Germany from the medieval occupations Bader and bar beer.

Designations

The word is derived from the French, where more friser as much as "comb the verb, ripples/crinkles "meant. The term hairdresser was never very common in the French and is mittlerweilen completely become extinct; it means there coiffeur arrange (of the French word more coiffer "the hair; comb "). Coiffeur (and/or in the Femininum Coiffeuse) is also the usual expression in Switzerland. These word forms descend from the old French word coife, with which the lining of a helmet (see illustration of a Coife) was designated by sword fighters. The English noun coif for "hood" refers likewise to this old-French word trunk.

Due to the popularity of the Mozarts' opera "Figaros wedding", in which the main role is a bar beer named Figaro, the designation Figaro is used occasionally as synonym for a hairdresser.

Tasks

Hairdressers work in hairdresser salons or visit the customers at home. They advise their customers, give them due to preferences and hair substance recommendations regarding the hair organization, wash, color and/or sound, foehn and cut the hair as well as turn and smooth curls. Usually they drive also hair care products out.

A multiplicity of achievements is taken up predominantly by women, since these possess a hair-style in Europe usually as men and children:

Finally the hairdresser should fulfill both technical and personal conditions, be able for a correct and type-appropriate consultation and for informal maintenance.

Protection of the customer

To the protection against a pollution of the clothes by hair, shampoos, gels and colors the customers a Umhang is usually put down. In the collars of this Umhangs occasionally are wedged to prevent over a rubbing against the neck and for hygenic reasons. The same effect is reached also by a flexible Halskrause. This broad neck-binds from material around the neck of the customer is put, afterwards the Umhang around it-put tautly and buckled on. Some hairdressers put on children special Halskrausen, which are to immobilize the head.

Persons with allergies against artificial fibers in the Umhang gotten usually a special bind as protection around the neck or must a jacket with high collar tighten, on which the Umhang is then put. That is often unpleasant, since it is under it warm and close. One sees such a suit in the picture. One can treat also the Umhang with a special means, in order to decrease the allergische reaction of the body with skin contact, or to e.g. use a Umhang from another material as half rubber.

The Frenchman Marcel Grateau developed 1872 the Ondulation (German: Ripples, wave), into the 60's the 20. Century one used.

The hairdresser Karl Nessler invented 1906 the Dauerwelle.

Among the most well-known hairdressers at present Gerhard Meir (Munich) rank, Udo roll (Berlin), Marlies (Hamburg), Vidal Sassoon (London), Fekkai (New York), Klaus Peter Ochs (Frankfurt/Main/Paris), Michael circulation (Berlin) and Toni&Guy (London)

Well-known ex hairdressers are the two German Hip Hop musicians Thomas D. from the Fantasti four and Thomas alias Clueso.
