Howard Robard Hughes (* 24 December 1905 in Houston, Texas; "† 5 April 1976 in an airplane over Texas) was an US-American entrepreneur. It was that main inheritance of the lucrative Hughes Tool company, film producer and aviation pioneer.
Hughes' father was the luck knight and Howard Robard "Bo "Hughes, its nut/mother Allene Gano, a rich, neuro tables heiress from Dallas. Howard came with an innate hearing suffering (Otosklerose) to the Welt.Er visited the exclusive Thacher School into California, however without conclusion. Its nut/mother died 1922, its father, Howard R. Hughes sen., short time later in the year 1924. Because of the death of its father the young Hughes left the Rice of institutes, which it had up to then visited, and took over the Hughes Tool company, which gained million-gains annually owing to its monopoly on oil drilling heads. "My first goal it, the best gulf player of the world is to be become. To become secondly the best flier and thirdly the most famous film producer. And then I want that you make me the richest man of the world." Howard Hughes said to its plenipotentiary Noah Dietrich, whom he had adjusted 1925, and who remained until 1957.
With the financial security of the Hughes Tool company in the back Hughes went to Hollywood, in order to work as film producer and a director. He married 1925 Ella Rice, from which he could be separated 1929 again. With the film actress Katharine Hepburn it was associated some years. He had responsibility for films such as The Racket (1928), Scarface (1932), The Outlaw (1940) as well as numerous less well-known strips, of which some floppten. More successful productions such as Hell's Angels (1930, at that time the most expensive film of all times) and The Front Page (1931) created it up to the OSCAR nominating. As a director he discovered Jean Harlow and Jane Russell, which he made filming acre. he bought the fastened Hollywood Studio RKO to 1948. Parallel to the activities in the film business Hughes began itself to interest in the Fliegerei and referred a barrack in Burbank/Los Angeles, in order to develop airplanes, which it tested as a pilot. With these self-developed airplanes it set up some records, among other things to 1935 the absolute speed record of 567 km/h or the record time of 7 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds for the distance Los Angeles - New York. Also its record of the fastest world orbiting with 91 hours in the year 1938 brought in acknowledgment for it. Only for short time the William P carried. hobby air haven in Houston its name, but after protests against the designation after a living person this honour was taken back.
From Hughes' barrack in Burbank followed finally the company Hughes aircraft and 1938/39 became Hughes majority shareholder of the airline Transcontinental and Western air (TWA), which was renamed later in Trans World Airlines. The TWA boss William John Frye financed the purchase Boeing of the B-307 Stratoliner with Hughes money. From Hughes also the philosophy for the Lockheed Constellation (when advancement super Constellation) came, one of the first passenger airlines with pressurized cabin, from which TWA acquired exclusively the first copies.
1942 came Hughes on the idea to build enormous water airplanes which should transport soldiers as well as tanks and other war material to Europe, since ships were constantly attacked by German submarines. It succeeded to it also to receive an order for government for this. But before its Flugboot was operational, was the war past. Only one copy (Hughes H-4) was finished placed and flown by Hughes only once. It is still the airplane with the largest span, which was ever built. Today this airplane, Spruce Goose (spruce goose) is mentioned, a tourist attraction in the Evergreen aviation museum in McMinnville in the US Federal State Oregon.
With that, Hughes had prototypes of a further own airplane construction, the Hughes XF-11 on 7 July 1946 a heavy accident, when he fell with this machine with a test flight over Beverly Hills in direct proximity of the Country club of golf course and three houses demolierte. The airplane in flames came up and Hughes tightened oneself heavy lasting injuries at head and back. From this accident he never recovered. In the consequence Hughes medicine and code in dependent became. The effects of its injuries and his drug dependence led to a personality change with paranoiden illusion conceptions, so that Hughes bore only a small staff of persons (excluding Mormonen) around itself, from which it the adherence to bizarrer rituals demanded. So for example seven Mormonen had to cover each article, which it touched, with
Since the company was Hughes aircraft after the war without business purpose, Hughes decided, to enter into straight again developing aviation and arms electronics and adjusted from all considerable universities experts. Occasionally busy Hughes aircraft 3300 attained a doctorate to physicist. The expenditure disbursed itself, and the company became the monopolist for arms electronics, to whom the US Department of Defense did not have long time an alternative. Today it is one of the most important arms companies, with the company Raytheon fused and manufactures cruise missiles, rockets, satellites, helicopters and electronic systems of all kinds.
In order to save taxes, Howard Hughes 1953 created the donation Howard Hughes Medical of institutes, which he transferred the ownership at Hughes aircraft.
Starting from center of the 1950er years began themselves with Hughes ever stranger personality courses noticeably to make, among other things a paranoide fear of bacteria, which led to the fact that he withdrew himself ever more from the public. At this time began also its controversy of many years over the airline TWA, which was meanwhile the largest of the world and which belonged to it to 75 %. Since Hughes could agree with the management not on the financing of the new jets and besides was hardly attainable, the management of its own society sued him for payment of 135 million dollar. Because Hughes, which had withdrawn itself since 1958 completely from the public, appeared never to Gerichtsterminen, he lost control of TWA and sold her 1966 for 546 million dollar. Into the 1970ern it entered again into the airline business and bought air west.
Howard Hughes spent the last 18 years of its life in complete separatingness in colluded hotel rooms, and it means, it nourished itself nearly only of ice cream, its urine in Milchflaschen collected and its nails very long grow to let. Only connected by telephone and letters with the external world, he starting from 1966 numerous Spielcasinos and hotel bought in read Vegas.
Over the question, like it Hughes was possible, from an inheritance, who had 1925 officially a value of 613,518 dollar to make a Milliardenimperium was often puzzled. "Eighty per cent genius of its general manager Noah Dietrich and twenty per cent player blood of Howard Hughes" means bio count John Keats. Certainly Hughes had an intuitive feeling for it, which industries promised largest growth at its time and no risk shrunk from to enter there. Without the sense of business of Noah Dietrich, who led 32 years long its business with firm grasp, amazing successes of Hughes' companies would have been surely not conceivable however.
Hughes' relations with US president Richard Nixon were minutes of the Watergate committee of the US senate according to a substantial trip of the Watergate affair. Nixon was afraid that the director/conductor of the election campaign committee of the democrats, Larry O'Brien, would possess Unterlagen over payments of Hughes at Nixon in six-digit height, which had flowed for election campaign purposes and for support for Nixons bankruptcies brother. The burglars should procure these documents as well as proofs for O' Briens own connection to Hughes. Thus Howard Hughes had written again history, without understanding, for which it actually went with the Watergate affair.
1972 were contacted Hughes of the CIA, in order to lift a Soviet submarine, which had sunk four years before. Hughes explained to the media, he wanted to investigate with the special construction named Hughes Glomar Explorer the deep sea and diminish manganese nodules there. For the CIA Hughes represented a marvelous camouflage.
In summers 1974 the salvage of the hostile submarine began, however it broke due to mechanical failure into two parts, and one of it fell again to soil. The official report writes that only two atomic torpedoes and some decoding machines were saved, while the interesting things were still on the sea-bottom.
