• A hostage is the victim of a taking of hostages.

In history humans to the guarantee that a contract is kept, with which other party than hostages were taken and had to live there. It concerned mostly sons of distinguished representatives of tributary states. These were normally honorable treated and educated in the host country. Today hostages are taken of criminals as prisoners, in order to use it for the extortion of a ransom, for the penetration of demands of terror or for the safety device of the departure.

In the doctrine of the nuclear deterrence the consideration that the deterrence is more effective, if no country has approximately enough shelter and/or shelter places for the entire population speaks one also of the hostage role of the population.

Of a captivity as a hostage one speaks, if a hostage is kept imprisoned by terrorists, in order to implement with it a certain demand or state a will or affirm an intention.
