The historical-political magazine given change from Leopold of climb between 1832 and 1836. It is considered as a forerunner of the modern technical periodicals of the science of history.

The HPZ based on suggestion of the politician and publisher Friedrich Perthes of the Prussian minister of foreign affairs at that time count von Bernstorff with the goal of creating "an organ for the defense of the policy of the enlightened Prussian bureaucracy against the liberal criticism of that linking " (zit. after: Wehler, Hans Ulrich (Hg.): German historians, Bd. I, P. 7). Won as publishers the historian climb, the pleaded to examine in its magazine the current political connections with the historical method. For the predominant part of the articles drew climb even responsible.

The profile of the sheet varied between that of a political propaganda organ and that a literary-historical magazine. The emphasis of the HPZ was with time-historical-political contributions. The magazine aimed clearly at the political public, on the other hand however crucially from the specialized historian climbs coined/shaped. Thus the historical-political magazine represented in the long run less a mirror of the contemporary historical and/or political science, but granted above all a view of the research Rankes - and in particular to their political detection.

The HPZ appeared only in two volumes: The first 1832 in four booklets with Friedrich Perthes in Hamburg, second during a clearly longer period of 1833-1836 with Duncker and Humblot in Berlin. This short, besides irregular Erscheinungsrythmus limited the function of the HPZ as technical periodical crucially. Above all nevertheless the historical-political magazine can be regarded as a forerunner of the appearing later magazine for science of history (1844-48) and the historical magazine (since 1859), be set the methodical standards than scientific, general-historical organs should: The emergence of both projects was characterized by a clearly personal influence Rankes.
