Hertie was up to the assumption by the Karstadt company 1993 one of the prominent department store companies in Germany, to department stores also leading like citizens of Berlin the KaDeWe, which Hamburg Alsterhaus or value home belonged in Berlin. The company name Hertie developed during the time of the national socialists, when the Jewish name Tietz could not be borne any longer, from the name of the uncle and backer of the founder Hermann Tietz (Hermann Tietz), which end 19. The Hertie being and department store GmbH was acquired 1993 by the Karstadt AG and is today part of the KarstadtQuelle AG. After the assumption strongholds of the AG by purchase yard there were four only two competing department store companies with it instead of so far (the Centrum department store branches of of the former GDR by purchase yard were taken over, Hertie did to a large extent however for example without its right at the branch in Gera (went to strongholds to the AG), operated however for example the former Centrum department store in Erfurt and Rostock after the turn).

Until today with exception of the tradition house existing since 1905 at the resident of Munich main station all Hertie branches in Karstadt were renamed, closed or sold. As next to last department store with the name "Hertie "was closed the branch in Berlin on 24 December 2005.

In the late summer 2005 Karstadt sold 74 smaller department stores ("Karstadt compact") to the British financial investors Dawnay, Day and Hilco UK Ltd. The sold branches may be led until 2009 still under the name Karstadt. According to own data one has the right to use the name "Hertie" for the smaller Karstadt compact houses wants of it however no use to make, but instead of its a completely new mark develop.

In the course of the reorganization of the KarstadtQuelle company, is resident of Munich the Hertie house, like also further Karstadt houses in Duesseldorf, Essen, Munich, etc. (among other things also value home at the Ku'damm in Berlin and the Alsterhaus in Hamburg), under a newer, elevated category to be classified, similarly the KaDeWe.

The non-profit Hertie donation has today its seat in Frankfurt westends.
