Hepatomegalie is the medical technical term for a abnorme enlargement of the liver (Hepar).

The Hepatomegalie can have a great many different causes:

  • Inflammation conditions: Virus infections (hepatitis, Pfeiffer gland fever and v. A.), alcohol hepatitis,
  • Blood rope by heart weakness (heart insufficiency),
  • Fat liver (Steatosis hepatis) e.g. after alcohol abuse of many years, in connection with a sugar illness (diabetes mellitus), with or other chronic damages of the liver,
  • good-like and malicious tumors, parasite (e.g. small dog tapeworm, Echinokokkus granulosus).

The term "Hepatomegalie" designates therefore not even an illness, but investigation findings, which must be interpreted in connection with other findings.
