Henri Cernuschi (* 1821 in Milan; "Â 12. May 1896 in Menton, Cote d'Azur) was a Italian-French politician and economist.
Cernuschi was born as a son of wohlhabener parents and should become after their will lawyer. During study he came into contact with the revolutionary movement into Italy. It was involved into rebellions in Milan (1848) and Rome (1849). There it had a seat in the national assembly. After the failure of the revolutionary government he was arrested 1850, could flee however to France. Here it was naturalized and acquired by trade and banking transactions a large fortune. It played a visible role in the resistance against the socialist movement. It had to again flee 1870, after it had used a large sum for the equipment of a committee, which should fight the napoleonischen Plebiszite. With the establishment of the third republic in September 1870 it could return. It left then however soon Paris for longer journey into the far east.
Cernuschi is admits for its publications to financial questions, in particular to the question of the bimetalism, in which he was a proponent of the silver basis. The word is to have been used at least in the English form in one of its publications for the first time, Silver Vindicated (1876).
