The harmonized consumer price index (HVPI) is a consumer price index raised in the European union, for which a European Union far uniform Warenkorb is the basis. The HVPI is the characteristic number, with which in the European economic and monetary union (EWWU) the price level development is measured.

The computation of a HVPI is necessarily, there the national consumer price indices due to historical characteristics, different social basic conditions as well as deviating structure of the statistic systems differs. Additionally to the national consumer price indices therefore in the EWWU states (in Germany since 1997) also national HVPIs is computed. The statistic office of the European Union (euro act) supervises the adherence to the rules for the determination of the national HVPIs and computes on this basis consumer price indices for the European Union and for the European marketing area altogether.

The monthly values for the HVPI are published by euro act always three weeks after end of the month. The conception of the HVPI tries to consider the measuring errors described before. To the regulations, with which on the part of the European commission the traditional inflation measurement Laspeyres price index in the future is to be improved, e.g. belong.:

• the examination of the goods selection: If a property in a country of the EWWU arrives at the market meaning, also the other countries must examine the inclusion into the Warenkorb.
• the examination of the quality of goods and its weights at run time index: Thus a clear pressure is exerted in the direction of an almost annual examination index.
