The Hanomag Henschel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH (short: HHF) was a truck manufacturer with seat in Hanover, which had resulted from a union of the truck manufacturers Hanomag and Henschel.
Mechanical engineering and vehicle manufacturer Hanomag (from Hanover) and the locomotive and truck producer Henschel (from Kassel) belonged already since 1952 and/or 1964 to the company of the Rheini steel plants AG from meals (short: Rhine steel). To the product program of Hanomag also small transporters and light trucks belonged beside construction machines and tractors, while the Henschel works beside locomotives had moderately severe to heavier trucks in the program. Since Rhine steel regarded commercial motor vehicle production only as part-time work (which expressed itself also in the fact that the two partial enterprises Hanomag and Henschel, although they complemented each other in their products ideally had been summarized not already long before), one was on the search for a financially strong partner from the commercial motor vehicle industry, which in the truck sections of the two companies and possibly take over these should take part.
Rhine steel took up therefore first negotiations with Magirus Deutz and later with British Leyland. The negotiations with Leyland drew the attention of Daimler Benz AG on itself, which saw a serious competition in the British. In order to prevent that Leyland could gain a foothold on the German market, it negotiated Daimler Benz likewise with Rhine steel and had success. To 1 April 1969 Rhine steel separated the commercial motor vehicle sections from the two enterprises Hanomag and Henschel and summarized it in the again created Hanomag Henschel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH with seat in Hanover. Daimler Benz took part in it with 51 %. Additionally Daimler Benz with 25 % took part in the remaining Rhine steel Hanomag. Since this time the otherwise invariably further-produced vehicles of the manufacturers Hanomag and Henschel got the new logo "Hanomag Henschel ". The factories from Hanomag Henschel were in"Â
Financial problems led to the fact that Rhine steel sold the remaining portions of the Hanomag Henschel for 140 millions DM to Daimler Benz AG to the year end 1970. Daimler Benz returned in response the participation to the Hanomag at Rhine steel.
How should prove soon, this trade meant actually the beginning of the end of the label names Hanomag and Henschel and/or straight only the created joint undertaking in the commercial motor vehicle industry. Daimler Benz did not assure to receive Hanomag Henschel as the second outlet (thus as independent mark beside its master mark Mercedes Benz) showed up in this connection however particularly consistently: First the heavy Hanomag Henschel trucks were then gradually adjusted gradually changed over to Mercedes technology, although with Hanomag Henschel at this time a new engine generation had been ready for the market, and their production. If the Hanomag Henschel vehicles were able to fill gaps in the existing Mercedes Benz program, they still another time were long continued to produce. Several models were sold for a transition period parallel both under the past name Hanomag Henschel as well as under the mark Mercedes Benz. This applied particularly to the easy Harburger transporter by Hanomag, (last excluding as Mercedes makes) still until 1977 was built (and thus the last leftover of Hanomag Henschel were) as well as to the heavy building vehicles originating from the Henschel program. These received still another one grace period, since them a very good reputation at the customers enjoyed and because Mercedes Benz within this range was there at that time still rather weakly set up (there were still no front steering wheel vehicles with all-wheel drive). Thus in the transition period as with the Harburger transporters were even originally offered by Henschel developed building vehicles with the Mercedes star and Mercedes Baumusterbezeichnungen.
After the model change of the heavy vehicles with Mercedes Benz starting from 1973 this gap was closed in the program. Logically the last vehicles provided with the label name Hanomag Henschel disappeared 1974 of the market. Rhine steel Hanomag sold the engine manufacturing remained in Hanover lime trees at Volvo. The plants were dismantled 1973 and spent to Sweden. In the former Henschel Lastwagenwerk in Kassel still to 1980 Mercedes trucks were produced, since become there only axles for Daimler Benz commercial motor vehicles, Trailer and transporters as well as commercial motor vehicle drive shafts and differentials for passenger car of the Daimler Benz company built.
