Hamilton Othanel Smith (* 23 August 1931 in New York, the USA) is an US-American biochemist.

it received 1978 together with Werner Arber and Daniel Nathans the Nobelpreis for physiology or medicine "for its discovery of the restriction enzymes and the application of these enzymes in the molecular genetics".
