Hair man & Reimer (H&R) was an enterprise of the smell and taste material industry with seat in Holzminden and fused together with the enterprise Dragoco in February 2003 to the Symrise GmbH & CO. Kg.

History of the enterprise

1874 to 1945

William hair man and Ferdinand Tiemann studied the oxidation of Coniferin with chrome tri oxide at August William of Hofmann in Berlin and discovered 1874 to Glucovanillin. Coniferin is the Glucosid of the Coniferylalkohols, which is contained by resinous woods in the Kambialsaft, which could be split up by treatment with acid or enzymes into glucose and Vanillin. For the industrial use of this synthesis way hair man created 1875 in Holzminden the Haarmann's Vanillinfabrik and was thereby the first factory of the world, which manufactured at all a synthetic taste material. Ferdinand Tiemann aimed at an academic career and took part therefore only as quiet partners in the enterprise, which he also further as an advisor for the order.

Together with a further pupil of Hofmann, Karl Ludwig Reimer, hair man the more economical representation of the Vanillins made of Eugenol succeeded, to a component of the carnation oil.

1876 occurred the chemist Reimer the enterprise, which was called since then hair man & Reimer. On that internationally Exhibition in Philadelphia in the USA received the first honor for its synthetic smelling materials to H&R.

1890 was begun in Holzminden to the Liebigstrasse with the building by work dwellings for married coworkers.

One 1891 of Tiemann developed Isoeugenol procedure lowered the manufacturing costs further and made the Vanillinproduktion profitable. 1893 were taken up also the production of the violet flavour Ionon in a procedure invented by Tiemann and announced as patent. For the production of natural plant extracts in Holzminden in addition a Lavendelplantage and a Reseda and a Lupinenpflanzungen were put on.

1881 separate Dr. Karl Reimer illness from the enterprise and die in January 1883.

1890 build framework double houses with "stable buildings for flock and a quarter of morning country", which can be rented favorably, for William hair man for married coworkers. Later a relief fund for work member come into emergency and a pension fund are added.

From 1893 to 1903 further 30 patent applications, under it also the Reimer Tiemann synthesis of the Salicyladehylds, followed a Vorprodukt of the forest master flavour Cumarin.

1899 die also the partner professor Ferdinand Tiemann.

1900 receive the enterprise in Holzminden a telephone connection (number 19).

1931 decease the firm founder Dr. Wilhelm hair man at the consequences of an injury, which he had tightened himself with a ship journey. Its sons took over the management of the enterprise.

1938 have H&R 100 coworkers and a conversion of 2 million realm Mark by the Second World War are lost all foreign participation.

1945 to 2003

1946 begin the laborious new start of the enterprise. The hourly wages for a worker amounted to 0.49 DM.

1949 amount to the number of the H&R coworkers in Holzminden at present the currency reform, 86 employees and 94 workers.

1953 operate the managing director Dr. Rudolf Groger and his deputy George Kerschbaum the change of H&R and find with the Bavarian company a strong financial source over an important manufacturer from smell and flavour materials to to become also international. 1953 have H&R 260 coworkers and gain a conversion of 5 million DM, with an export quota of 17 per cent.

1954 are bought up the enterprise by the Bavarian AG and resumed as subsidiary independently.

H&R creates subsidiaries and transacts acquisitions in Mexico, in the USA, in Brazil, in Great Britain, in South Africa, in France and in Spain.

1955 are selected Norbert Malaka the work council chairman by H&R and appointed 1959 the operating master. 1962 are Malaka also in the supervisory board of the enterprise.

1968 works over 1.000 coworkers for H&R and gains a world-wide conversion of 80 million DM, with an export quota of 35 Prozent.1968 becomes Dr. Claus Skopalik of new managing directors of H&R as successors of Dr. Rudolf Groger.

1973 succeed to the enterprise for the first time the full-synthetic production of Menthol.

1990 take over H&R the odoriferous substance manufacturer Aromatiques.

1992 assumption of the of PFW.

1995 assumption of the smell and taste material manufacturer Florasynth.

1997//1998 invest H&R 43 million DM into new plants among other things the reaction distilling plant for smell and cosmetic active substances in Holzminden and Monterrey (Mexico). In addition new building of the production plants in Bogota (Colombia), as well as new buildings and plants in Paulo (Brazil).

1998 amount to the conversion approximately 1.5 billion DM (approx. 767 million euro) world-wide.

H&R employs and is represented 1999 world-wide over 4.000 coworkers with own societies on all continents.

1999 are finished a new work in for 70 million DM.

1999 take over H&R the Chinese portions of the Joint venture society H&R Cosfra Ltd. in Shanghai. Plans for a building of fresh from the factory in Podong (quarter of Shanghai) one began.

2003 fusion with Dragoco to the Symrise GmbH & CO. Kg.
