A gang (also Garotte, of Spanish red vil = more infamously/mean stick) is an execution instrument, with which the condemned one is bound to a Holzpfahl. In addition, the gang is used and as torture instrument.

Contrary to the strangulation - by pinching the carotid artery off - pressing the bronchial tube together takes place with the gang. The victim was strangled, death occurred slowly by suffocating. In early versions the Henker put from the rear a loop around the neck, which it closed by means of a stick slowly to the victim. Later the loop was replaced by a metal band, which served only for fixing. The victim from the rear a Metallschraube was driven in the neck, whereby death occurred usually presently/immediately.

Until 1974 was executed death sentences in Spain by the gang and reported in the nationally affected media consistently on it. Their last victims were Salvador Puig Antich and George Michael Welzel.

Also a medium strong metal wire, which is provided at the two ends with about in each case 10-15 cm long wood bits, is called gang. This classical Garotte became predominantly of the criminal ones in the France 19. and early 20. Century uses (for instance in Paris Montmartre or in the dockland of Marseille). Also the old-established Mafiaorganisationen (particularly the Cosa Nostra in Sicilies) used the Garotte as murder weapon frequently. With the Garotte can the murderer usually noiseless its victim from the rear strangle, without the victim can give loud of noises of itself.
