"The Design prescribed for the gunnery sergeant consisted OF three chevrons and three bars with the "DEVICEs OF the school OF application" -- A crossed rifle and naval gun behind A globe, anchor and Eagles --into the centers."

1904 was changed the badges. At this time the badge of the GySgt of three upright angles and two crossed rifles present under it and an exploding bomb insisted on red reason.

Since around 1900 nearly half that on board ships of US Navy were inserted marine, GySgt were originally Sergeants, those competent in the area of hand-held weapons, transmission of news and naval shooting natures were. Henry Pavlovic: US navy Corps in World was I 1917-1918, Osprey 1999, S.45. "It originally denoted A shipboard sergeant proficient in smallarms, signalling and naval gunnery, and institution OF the climb played A symbolic part into the Navy's internal struggle over more whether the marine were primarily ton stay on board ship and serve as part OF the vessel's guncrew. After the First World War GySgt were used often not technically in the naval artillery, but also entrusted with other tasks. They were used as office forces, Chauffeure, in the guard service and as military policemen. When beginning 1923 the rank of the Staff Sergeant was introduced, the Commandant the GySgt forbade to be used further in this kind should. Instead they had itself now in fields like the repair, flight dynamic, communication or cannon technology qualify. United States navy Corps Ranks and of degree of 1775-1969, HQMC 1970, S.138. Actually the rank of the GySgt was given up likewise with this reform, and/or by the rank of the Technical Sergeant replaces, whereby informally many far with "Gunny "addressed wurden.USMC Ranks and of degree, S.162-174. "Effective 1 December 1946, the new designation OF climb went into effect." Besides the badge had already lost 1937 the exploding bomb in the center.

From 1958 to 1 January 1963 became, including a transitional phase, which changes rank system of the NCOs again. A transitional phase was therefore created, so that no strips lost old-served marine. Acting or kommissarische ranks (acting ranks) were introduced, then those could keep marine their titles, badge and privileges. Then they were carried within the transitional phase into new ranks. In the course of this reform however also the Technical Sergeant was let fall again and those marine in this rank became too acting Gunnery Sergeants. The prefix acting became then on 1 August 1960 on instruction of the Commandant abgeschafft.USMC Ranks and of degree, S.178ff. "This which achieved by establishing "acting" ranks, then that all marine would able tons retain their existing titles, insignia, and of privileges. Upon graduation, they would assume the new climb titles. [...] Marine getting thing that climb were designated acting gunnery sergeants. "
