Guild the technical organization form of the handicraft on local and/or regional level (usually this is the district borders) is called. In it unites craftsman same or similar handicrafts, in order to promote their common interests.

The membership in a guild is voluntary for crafts enterprises (contrary to the membership in the chamber of trade).

Their tasks are regulated in the handicraft ordinance (law for the order of the handicraft). Essentially is this:

• Promotion of the common commercial interests of their members
• Care common spirit and the occupation honour as well as promotion of the good relationship between masters, associates and to apprentices
• Regulation and monitoring of the training in the context of the binary training, acceptance of associating examinations
• Promotion of the relating to crafts of the masters and associates (e.g. by technical schools or training courses)
• Refund of appraisal and information over affair in it organize handicraft
• Switching with disputes between members and their clients.

The legal form of the guilds is body of the public right. They stand under the legal supervision of the respective chamber of trade.

Frequently the guilds have common offices with the Kreishandwerkerschaften.

In Austria: Other designation of specialized groups of the section trade and handicraft of the chambers of economics. Contrary to Germany the membership in the technically responsible specialized group (guild) in Austria is obligating (obligation membership). The legal form of the guilds is those also here the body of the public right.

The chairman of the board of the guild is the upper master, its deputies stv. Upper master, a further important function in the guild as well as their executive committee dresses the Lehrlingswart, who functions as link between the apprentices and the training enterprises of a trade problem-solving. A guild educates numerous committees, as e.g. the associating test committee, that regulates all associating examinations system within the respective guild range, the vocational training committee, that essentially contributes the policy to education questions of a certain trade. Furthermore there is a council, which is to serve for all technical questions as competent approach place, an economic committee, various (controversy) conciliation-committee-superordinate professional associations is the with the respective national guild master as well as on federal level the central associations of the respective professions with their chairmen.
