The guidance characteristic method is actual a tool for determination that (objectively) existing working load. It became of the Federal Institution for industrial safety and industrial medicine (BAuA) and the land committee for industrial safety and safety engineering (LASI) develops. With the load handling regulation of December 1996 the system of the German industrial safety right got a new important aid to the minimization and removal of health endangerments during the manual handling of loads.

The guidance characteristic method is prepared for the endangerment evaluation with activities

  1. lifting, holding and carrying and
  2. with activities of pulling and pushing.

The four guidance characteristics become methodical in the first step

  1. Length of time/frequency
  2. Load weight
  3. Body attitude and
  4. Remark conditions

seized. Subsequently, from the estimates of the guidance characteristics mathematically a risk value is computed, which results in the further approach (measure plan after the endangerment evaluation). Specialists for industrial safety, company doctors and work councils are to be taken part.

For the evaluation of the conditions of work according to the guidance characteristic method the BAuA makes extensive assistance available.
