The Grubel Lloyd index measures the intraindustriellen trade. This index was introduced by Grubel, Herbert G. and Peter J. Lloyd 1975.

For an industry with a Warenkorb i Xi exported and Mi the index is imported

I = [(Xi+Mi) - |Xi Mi|] 100/(Xi+Mi).

Interpretation:

The portion of the intraindustriellen trade of the total trade of the respective country gives a reference to the similarity of economic trends within an industrial sector, e.g. to the automobile industry compared to other countries of the euro-area. For each high the index is the more strongly spreads specific shocks over all regarded countries and works thus toward a (parallel process) of the economic trends.
