The term group manufacturing stands for a kind of production run and describes the logical-spatial arrangement of the machines in a production plant.

Often it is not possible to manufacture a product only in pure flow production. Therefore in practice always frequent combinations of different manufacturing methods are used, with which by coworkers the responsibility for the production of a product, a building group or a parts category is handed over to a group. All jobs and machines, which are necessary for production, are combined into a group of manufacturing, in which the coworkers transfer the controlling and organization of production to sole responsibility. One calls this a "flow island". The later unification of the individual products of the groups of manufacturing result in the whole complete product.
