Griffon Hovercraft Ltd. is the world largest manufacturer of air cushion vehicles. The British enterprise has its seat in the southEnglish Southampton. All Hovercrafts is produced both in civilian as well as military variants.
Griffon Hovercraft was created 1976 by Edwin GIF Ford and Don Robertson. GIF Ford had already worked into the 1960ern with Christopher Cockerell, the inventor of the air cushion vehicle, at the development of Hovercrafts and the mechanism of regular on the English Channel. When it came into the 1970ern however to substantial diversities of opinion between the two developers, Grifford decided to create its own company. While Hovercrafts were propelled so far with gas turbines, GIF Ford decided to develop a drive with petrol engine. In the comparison to previous drive systems diesel engines offered a clearly higher reliability and are fewer susceptible to damage by seawaters. In May 2000 with the 8000TD that, after the retirement from service of the SRN4, was introduced up-to-date largest civilian Hovercraft.
