The Grand Geysir is in the upper Geysir basin of the Yellowstone national park in the USA. It is the largest, regularly eruptierende Geysir of the world. It received 1871 to its name from the participants of the Hayden expedition, because they had seen no larger Geysir during their Forschungsreise by the Yellowstone area so far.
In the history of the Yellowstone national park the Grand Geysir long time belonged to the little foreseeable Geysiren, its eruptions came very irregularly. Today it is very many more regular. The outbreaks of the Grand Geysir take place all 7 to 15 hours.
The Grand Geysir belongs to the jump-well-like Geysiren, i.e. the output of the water happens gush-like and can consist of several impacts. An average eruption of the Grand Geysir lasts 9 to 12 minutes and consists of 1 to 4 water outputs. The eruption can reach a height of up to 60 m. After the end of an outbreak the groundwater basin of the Geysirs is completely emptied. In one period of approximately five hours it fills then again slowly with water.
The Grand Geysir belonged to the Grand group designated after it and forms its center. To the group continue to belong among other things the Turban Geysir, vent Geysir, rift Geysir and the west Triplet Geysir.
Most Geysire of the Grand group are characterised by relatively frequent eruptions. Besides they affect each other mutually in their activities. Thus it was stated that the Grand Geysir breaks only after before taken place an eruption Turban Geysir off. The vent Geysir eruptiert almost exclusively in connection with activity of the Grand of Geysirs and eruptions rift Geysir or west Triplet Geysir affect retarding outbreaks of the Grand Geysir.
