Justified to the production officially of the Grana Padano being allowed hard cheese are the areas of the following provinces call themselves: Alessandria, Asti, Cuneo, Novara, Torino, cellos, Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Mantova A sinistra del Po (Mantuesi area on the left of pos), Milano, Pavia, Sondrio, Varese, Trient, Padua, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice, Verona, Vicenza, Bologna A destra del fiume Reno (thus the area on the right of the river Reno), Ferrara, Piacenza, Ravenna and Rimini. It resembles the Parmesan, is however somewhat less pronouncedly in the taste, for it however more favorable in the price. The fact that Grana Padano is less pronounced every now and then in the taste is also because of the fact that Grana is often younger acted than Parmesan. A Grana matured for a long time can quite take up it however in opinion of connoisseurs with Parmigiano. In the taste the mountain cheese from mountain areas is particularly characteristic such as Bergamo.

Not only outside of Italy Grana is usually used as replacement for Parmesan. In particular with fresh rubbed cheese is Grana to the Parmigiano to be even preferred, if it concerns a tasting mild court, whose self-taste is not to be over-radiated by the cheese.
