The German renters association (DMB) is the highest instance of the protection of interests from tenant inside and tenants in Germany. It is the controlling body of the 15 national associations in Germany. The national associations are roof federations of the local tenant associations.

Already in the second half 19. Century tenants had together-found themselves local to self-help mechanisms. In Dresden 1868 the first "Miethbewohnerverein" developed. Housing misery and a large outlawry of the tenants marked this epoch.

In the year 1900 finally 25 tenant associations created the federation of the tenant associations (later: Federation of German tenant associations) in Leipzig and put thereby the foundation-stone for a German tenant movement.

The Tiefpunkt of the tenant movement took place during the time of the national socialism, 1942: Realm federation of the house and basic owners, federation of German tenant associations and the German settler federation became coordinated.

Since 1982 the German renters association operates the DMB legal expenses insurance AG with seat in Cologne.

The German renters association was created 1951 as union of the respective roof federations of the American and English zones of occupation in Cologne. Since September 2001 it sits in Berlin.

Since June 1995 Anke is fox president of the German renters association. Dr. Franz George Rips is since 1 July 1995 a director of the DMB.
